The Claddagh ring is Ireland's best-known symbol of love, loyalty and friendship. Whether you're buying one as a gift or for yourself, it helps to know what the design means and how to wear it. At O'Malleys on Dominick Street in Mullingar, we stock Claddagh rings and pendants, and we're happy to help you choose.

What Does the Claddagh Ring Mean?

The Claddagh design has three parts, and each one carries a meaning:

  • The hands stand for friendship.

  • The heart stands for love.

  • The crown stands for loyalty.

Together they are often summed up in the old blessing: "Let love and friendship reign."

Where Does the Claddagh Ring Come From?

The ring takes its name from Claddagh, an old fishing village just outside the walls of Galway city. The design dates back to the 17th century. The most popular story tells of Richard Joyce, a Galway man captured at sea and taken to North Africa, where he learned the goldsmith's trade. When he finally returned home, he is said to have made the first Claddagh ring for the woman who had waited for him.

How to Wear a Claddagh Ring

The way you wear a Claddagh ring traditionally tells the world about your heart:

  • Right hand, heart facing out: you're single and open to love.

  • Right hand, heart facing in: you're in a relationship.

  • Left hand, heart facing out: you're engaged.

  • Left hand, heart facing in: you're married.

Claddagh Jewellery as a Gift

Claddagh jewellery makes a meaningful gift for birthdays, anniversaries, weddings and Mother's Day. It's also a favourite gift for family and friends living abroad, as a reminder of home. As well as rings, the design comes in pendants and earrings. Our silver Claddagh pendant with a red heart stone is a popular choice.
